St Buryan Farm Shop: A visit fit for a king!

Want to save money, eat organically and reduce waste? St Buryan Farm Shop has got you covered.

Iris Rainbow reports.

This is a story highlighting the benefits of sourcing your veg locally.

I spoke to Morwenna Bone, who owns the farm shop with her husband Richard to find out more.

Emphasizing their no-waste approach, this family-run shop sells a plethora of home- reared, homemade and home-grown goods. From organic veg to award winning pasties! Even the king is impressed, and having once been the Duke of Cornwall, he knows his way around a good pasty!

On the 12th of March 2024, I made my way to find out for myself how beneficial buying locally grown produce really is.

Unique to businesses like Morwenna and Richard’s, and unlike large chains such as Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s, the produce you’ll buy has come from a field a stone's throw away, reducing food miles, supporting local and wasting nothing.

Morwenna’s waste free ambitions mean that if fresh produce isn’t sold, that’s no problem, as she cooks them into a variety of delicious meals and sells them frozen at an affordable price for a quick and easy home-cooked comfort meal.

Morwenna’s waste-free methods don’t stop there! She also sells home-made preserves, such as pickles, jams and compotes, which, I can confirm, are delicious.

There are numerous reasons why eating, organic, fresh and local produce is beneficial.

Here, I have referred to Food Network Revolution who reference all of their facts from reliable scientific sources.

Eating locally grown produce may actually be safer!

When food, such as fruits and vegetables are imported and out of season, they often have to be artificially "ripened" using different gasses such as Calcium Carbide which is carcinogenic and can contain traces of arsenic which is toxic.

Eating locally reduces CO2 emissions

Buying local evidently reduces food miles meaning that your produce is not only, fresher, but better for the environment.

Preservation of green peace

Supporting locally helps local farmers so that they are less likely to sell their land to developers.

Passionate about her business, Morwenna also stated that she enjoys how her and Richard's "local food creates community and connection" as well as "tasting great and offering more variety".

I also spoke to the on-site butcher, who himself is passionate about eating great quality food. Amongst this insightful discussion, it was clear that his passion reflected the quality of your cut of meat, suiting your every need.

After learning about the quality of my groceries and where they were from, I gathered the necessary ingredients I required to make a recommended recipe from Morwenna herself.

Significantly cheaper and 100% more ethical, St Buryan Farm Shop proves that organic produce doesn’t need to break the bank like so many assume. There’s no doubt that I will be returning.
