The B Corp launched in 2018 with the goal of removing single use plastics such as bubble wrap from the e-commerce industry, and after a successful period over lockdown, have continued to grow.

“What Flexi-Hex are doing is trying to strip plastic from the packaging industry, but it's also so much more than that," said Marketing Director at Flexi-Hex, Bella Collins. “It’s about looking at sustainability beyond the obvious. It’s addressing all parts of your business - the way you involve the local community, how you govern your decisions, how you operate as an office, to the products you make. It’s more than just the environment and I think that it’s really important as a business that we discuss that.”

Management Accountant Kyle Fraser went into more detail about Flexi-Hex’s products and ambitions.

“It’s essentially a multi-purpose sleeve, starting with a 1-metre sleeve, down to a 30cm sleeve, down to even smaller 10-20cm sleeves. The purpose is to move away from plastic, and I think by 2030 a lot of people want to start doing that. People when they build their brand want to say that they are sustainable. A lot of our customers care about the environment, but we are there for when that full transition comes.”

Industries that Flexi-Hex are currently tapped into include Boardsports, Bottles, Cosmetics, Electronics and Hardware. Fraser pointed out - “we’re growing fast, and we’re moving into more industries and we’re getting queries through our inboxes to move into even more. The whole point of a multi-purpose sleeve is that there are multiple industries that we haven’t even touched yet.”

“To complement the sleeve we also produce boxes. But we produce boxes that perfectly complement the shapes of the items that are being packaged. Especially in the drinks industry, things have got way less chance of breaking. We have videos demonstrating the strength and integrity of the box. If people are spending £50-£100 on a bottle of champagne then they need to feel assured that it is going to be protected.”

“Cornwall is known for its beauty, but we know we have a problem. Even now that we may have not hit our tipping point, we believe that there is going to be one in the future. Every year we’re learning more about ourselves and about our industries.”

As the rise in e-commerce grows alongside the need to be sustainable, the success of Flexi-Hex’s sustainable packaging looks certain to continue.
