A collaboration between Circular & Co and FX Plus has brought a returnable coffee cup scheme to Fox and AMATA Café, encouraging students to take up greener practices without damaging their pockets.

Within the busy flow of Falmouth University campuses, a reusable coffee cup initiative has taken place. This hopes to challenge the all-too-normal spread of disposable and paper cups in the hands of students.
FX Plus, the organization delivering services for Falmouth and Exeter Universities, have collaborated with sustainability-driven Circular & Co, to trigger a wave of change across the university’s cafés. Reusable and returnable coffee cups have been made available, accompanied by a deposit scheme. You can get your hands on two sizes: an 8oz size for £2 and a 12oz size for £3. These can then be returned after use for your money back.
Traditionally, cafés have been synonymous with leisurely moments sipping on coffee in the elegance of a porcelain cup. Now, with a necessity to keep up with the demands of a fast-paced society, to-go cups have risen to prominence. Dressed in the branding of whatever shop you decide to spend your money in, these cups have become a symbol of today’s throw-away culture. As convenience has become king, sustainability has been put to the side.
The UK each year uses 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups annually. Crafted from plastic and polyethene, to-go cups are often found left in landfills, while only 1 in 400 are recycled. This has left several students asking for something to be done about this in their place of education. One student on campus said, “I think it’s a great idea to encourage students to be more conscious of sustainability”, whilst another said, “It’s often hard to act sustainable when not having much disposable income, so this idea I think is super beneficial”.

The innovative introduction of Circular & Co’s cups has brought a guilt-free experience to enjoying coffee. To sell this idea even further, a Fox Café employee explained to me the 20p discount awarded to customers who use reusable cups. She further described that it only takes 10 visits to make your money back.
So as more hands clasp the reusable cups on campus, students can proudly say they’re being sustainably proactive. Coffee culture on campus is being rewritten; urging students and staff to champion a future where every sip is a step towards a more sustainable world.
